Masahiko Kokubun~Paper Clay Artist

 

Born and raised in Fukushima Prefecture, Masahiko Kokubun continues to reside in the region, active as an artist with pieces currently on display in various locations.

 

Kokubun was afflicted with a stress-triggered intractable disease in 1991, during his second year of high school. After graduation, he was employed by an amusement center featuring video games. He quit the amusement center at age 29, and then jumped from job to job until 2004, when his illness took a turn for the worse and he was hospitalized.

 

Kokubun continues to recuperate at home after two years of stints in and out of the hospital. As part of this recuperation, Kokubun began to create objects using paper clay, a material he knew well as a young boy, and one that would not present a burden to his physical condition. With a sense that this nostalgic paper clay medium might guide him back to the meaning of his own life, Kokubun started on a self-taught journey.

 

He was astonished by the easily pliable material and the unexpected lines and forms it enabled him to create; he became caught up in the allure of paper clay art.

 

Kokubun’s artistic style runs the gamut of genres, from original figures to playful characters and abstract objects, with each work expressing a unique perspective of the world. Through free-hand work and use of a toothpick, he makes each piece seem alive and flowing with energy.

 

As Kokubun started showing his work in various venues, he began to develop a concept of integrating art into daily lifestyles. “Why not create diverse opportunities for more people to experience art more naturally? Why shouldn’t art be a part of one’s home, cafes, restaurants, bridal spaces, and more...”

He feels strongly that the value of art should not be determined by its price-- good art has nothing to do with the artist’s fame or lack thereof. So, Kokubun set out to exhibit his works in a style that encourages collaboration with environments to foster artists.

 

Kokubun introduced his work in 2008, displaying pieces in a local department store.

 

His first solo exhibition, Scenes to be Enjoyed at Midnight, was held in 2010 in Shiogama City, Miyagi.

 

Shine squall, based on the image of a bridal scene, was displayed in 2011 at the Namiki branch of the popular wedding venue, ama terrasse, in

Koriyama City, Fukushima. 2012-May~July , Laschicas omotesando. 2013-february, Shibuya Hikarie and october ,Sendai city Za Cafe 2014-Subsidiary of fuij tv, Appear on Mezamashi TV. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

福島県出身 在住。

 

1991年、ストレス性の難病潰瘍性大腸炎を発症する。

高校卒業後、アミューズメント施設に就職、2005年に退職。

 

 

その後すぐに携帯電話のショップなどの職を転々とするが、

2004年に難病がさらに悪化、間もなく入院。

 

 

2年間入退院をした後、自宅療養生活をする。

 

療養生活中、身体に負担がかからずできることをしようと思い

幼少の頃に慣れ親しんだ紙粘土に触れることで人生の原点回帰を思い、独学で作品制作を開始。

 

自在に変化し意図するラインとは違った仕上がりに衝撃を受けその魅力にとりつかれる。

 

 

制作する際に使用する道具、『つまようじ』をこだわりをもって使用している。

全作品に共通しているのは 非常に躍動感のある作風が特徴。

 

 

アート作品を家庭で味わう事はもちろん、カフェやレストラン、ブライダルスペースなど場所を選ばず 日常生活風景の中に 文化を超えた多くの人々が味わう機会があって良いのでは という思いから、 コレクションとしての価値のみで判断するのではなく、

 

 

『良い作品には有名無名に関係ない』という思いと、 芸術家を育てる環境にご協力して頂けたら、というスタイルでの展示を行っている。

 

 

2008年 地元百貨店に初展示。
2010年 宮城県塩竈市にて初個展、『真夜中に見る風景』を開催。 2011年 福島県郡山市のアーマテラス並木店にてウェディングイメージ作品 『shine squall』を展示。

 

 

2012年 5月~7月迄ラスチカス表参道にて作品『night queen~夜想鳥』を展示。

2013年 2月に公募展Monster Exhibitionに『南の空は3度微笑む』を展示。 (渋谷ヒカリエにて)

 

 

2013年 仙台 『坐カフェ』にて2013年10月から自然とリラクゼーションを題材に展示(2014.4.3現在も)。

 

 

2014年 フジテレビ系列番組『めざましテレビ』新たな発明品、 アート作品紹介コーナー More sevenに出演。 

 

 

2014年　京都国際映画祭 アート部門に出展。期間は10月16日から19日。アートをまだよく分かっていない中、今から6年前に制作した作品で

これまでの展示のキッカケを作ってくれた

『night queen〜夜想鳥』を展示。
